The demand for part time courses in horticulture has increased over the last few years, prompting Warrenstown College and ITB to offer a number of courses to both the professional and amateur gardener.

Award:             Single Subject Certification in Landscape and Garden Management

Prerequisite:      None

Schedule:         Thursday evening 6.30pm – 9.30pm and four Saturday practical                       sessions of four hour duration per semester in Warrenstown

Fee:                1,600 (2008-09)

 

Having completed the module students should be able to:
• Demonstrate knowledge of plant nomenclature.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the Irish Flora.
• Identify a comprehensive range of indoor and outdoor ornamental plants.
• Know how to construct and maintain many ornamental garden features.
• Establish and maintain lawns.
• Design and construct different hard landscape and water features.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge and practical ability for growing fruit and vegetable       crops on a garden or estate scale.
  • Understand the growing of plants in glasshouse structures.
  • Explain methods of suitable practice in horticulture.

 

Who Should Attend?


This part time course is designed for both the professional gardener and serious  amateur gardeners.
The course will be offered in different modes: classroom instruction and studio work supported by video, slides, plans and practical/ skill demonstrations.
 


Entry Requirements to HETAC Programmes


The standard minimum entry requirement is a pass in five leaving Certificate subjects including English or Irish and mathematics or equivalent.

Mature students {i.e. those who are over 23 years or more on January
1st in the year of entry} applying for the first level of programmes are exempt from this requirement.
 


Course Structure

The course begins in September and finishes in May each year, with lectures in ITB each week and four Saturdays per semester in Warrenstown for practical demonstrations and skills practice.
The course will be offered over two 13 weeks semesters comprising 3 hours per week at ITB and four Saturday practical sessions of 4 hours duration per semester at Warrenstown.
